ECAT is the deciding factor for admission to UET Lahore and several other public-sector engineering universities in Pakistan. Unlike MDCAT, it's less widely written about — so many FSc Pre-Engineering students under-prepare simply from not knowing exactly what to expect.
Know the Weighting Before You Plan Your Time
ECAT covers Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and English, but Mathematics typically carries the heaviest weighting, followed by Physics. Students who split their study time evenly across all four subjects often under-prepare for Math relative to how much of the exam it actually represents. Check your target university's exact merit formula too — some weight ECAT alongside FSc marks differently, which affects how much ECAT prep time is actually worth relative to protecting your FSc GPA.
Mathematics: Speed Matters as Much as Accuracy
ECAT Math questions are FSc-syllabus based but time-boxed tightly. Calculus, algebra, and trigonometry should be practiced until calculation speed becomes automatic — not just until you can eventually get the right answer. Timed problem sets, not untimed textbook exercises, build this.
Physics: Formula Fluency Under Pressure
Physics on ECAT is numerical and formula-heavy. The failure mode isn't usually "not knowing the formula" — it's hesitating on which formula applies under time pressure. Practicing mixed problem sets (rather than one-topic-at-a-time drilling) builds the pattern recognition needed to identify the right approach quickly.
Chemistry and English: Don't Neglect the Lighter Sections
Because Chemistry and English carry lighter weighting, some students skip them almost entirely in favor of Math and Physics. This is a mistake — they're still scored, and for students close to a merit cutoff, a strong Chemistry/English score can be the difference-maker. A balanced plan still gives them dedicated (if smaller) practice time.

- Daily Math and Physics practice — the two heaviest-weighted subjects
