MDCAT 2025 Preparation Tips: How to Score 90%+

2024-12-10 10 min readBy Dr. Zeeshan Ahmed — MDCAT Coach

The MDCAT (Medical and Dental College Admission Test) is one of Pakistan's most competitive examinations, with over 100,000 students vying for a limited number of medical and dental college seats each year. Achieving 90%+ requires not just hard work, but a strategic, well-structured approach. Here's what our experienced MDCAT tutors recommend.

Understanding the MDCAT Syllabus and Format

The MDCAT is conducted by the Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) and tests Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and English. The exam consists of 210 MCQs to be completed in 3.5 hours. Biology carries the highest weightage (68 questions), followed by Chemistry (54), Physics (54), and English (34). Understanding this distribution helps you prioritize your preparation accordingly.

Start With Biology — Your Highest Weightage Subject

Biology should be your primary focus, as it carries 32% of the total marks. Key topics include: Cell Biology, Genetics, Evolution, Animal Physiology, Plant Biology, and Ecology. The PMC MDCAT Biology questions are concept-based, requiring genuine understanding rather than rote memorization. Use the official PMC resource book and supplement it with Kips and other trusted MDCAT preparatory materials.

Chemistry: Balance Organic, Physical, and Inorganic

MDCAT Chemistry questions are designed to test applied understanding of chemical concepts. Don't neglect Organic Chemistry — reaction mechanisms and functional group identification are frequently tested. For Physical Chemistry, master mole calculations, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. Review all 12 chapters of FSc Chemistry with MDCAT-style MCQs for each.

Physics: Prioritize High-Yield Topics

MDCAT Physics can be challenging because questions often require both conceptual understanding and numerical calculation skills in a multiple-choice format. High-yield topics include Mechanics (Newton's laws, projectile motion), Waves, Electrostatics, and Modern Physics. Practice eliminating wrong answers strategically when you're unsure — a useful technique for tricky Physics MCQs.

Create a 6-Month Study Calendar

Six months of structured preparation is typically sufficient for a strong MDCAT score. Here's a rough framework: Months 1–2: complete subject notes and first-pass revision. Months 3–4: topic-by-topic MCQ practice with Kips/Nust books. Months 5–6: full-length mock tests, past MDCAT papers, and targeted weak-area revision. This timeline assumes 6–8 hours of daily study.

Mock Tests Are Non-Negotiable

Take full-length, timed mock tests at least once per week in the final two months. Treat each mock test like the real exam — same timing, same conditions. Analyse your performance after each test, identify weak topics, and revise them before the next test. Track your score trends to measure improvement.

Achieving 90%+ in MDCAT is demanding but absolutely achievable with the right preparation strategy, consistent effort, and expert guidance. Our MDCAT tutors in Islamabad and Rawalpindi are available for both home and online tutoring to support your journey.
